“Knowledge empowers you to shape the situation. Ignorance empowers the situation to shape you.”
- Ibhubesi The Great
The more you understand a problem, the better you are able to handle it. Pain is a great teacher because it is scary. When we understand why the pain is there, then we can work on ways to reduce the pain and allow it to heal. If we ignore it, then it will continue to limit you.
Gaining knowledge about your painful condition empowers you to shape your situation and even improve it. This may be why I love physical therapy. I love listening to what the body is saying so we can give it what it needs.
For example, if you suffer back pain every day sitting in front of your computer. That pain teaches you that work is painful. But what if it is really saying, “your computer chair needs to be adjusted with a lumbar support and you need to move a little more.” Once you know that, then work isn’t painful anymore and your back is happy. The resolution is often simple even if it isn’t easy to do.
Empowerment starts with the Triple R Strategy. Remove, Replace, and Restore. Remove the aggravating factor. Replace it will healthy positioning and exercise. Restore function.
Physical therapy can help empower you to shape your situation the way you want by helping you to identify those aggravating factors and help you replace them with healthy movement to restore your function.
