The word “SOAR” started for me as an acronym to Spine Orthopedic Active Rehab when I ventured into my own private business. As I moved into a blend of health coaching and physical therapy, the meaning of the word soar became one of the four principles to health and wellness.
Soar means to fly or rise high above the usual level. There is something both majestic and effortless about watching a bird soar thru the air even though it must return to earth to feed and rest.
How does one soar in life with EASE?
To soar in life, one must have four simple daily habits:
Focus on whole nutrient rich plant and animal foods that are naturally gluten-free
Move your joints through their full range of motion daily, get your heart rate up occasionally, lift heavy occasionally and move in the sunshine with your skin exposed whenever possible.
Focus on 8-10 hours of sleep nightly in a dark, cool room.
Connect to your mind, body, earth and community regularly.
The four principles are simple and clear, yet why does it seem so complicated? The complication is self-inflicted. Either we don’t focus enough attention on an individual habit or we focus too much. It isn’t about moderation of any particular item so much as finding the “sweet spot”. To soar, the “sweet spot” is where your focus is to gain maximal benefits for minimal effort.
This image for movement is a great image to see that that if we push ourselves physically too hard we may be likely to have injury or burn out yet if we don’t push ourselves enough we will have illness and injury also. The “sweet spot” is where we work hard enough to gain benefits of strength and cardiovascular health in a sustainable manner. Working smarter, not harder is the key to successfully soaring in life.
Finding your “sweet spot” requires FOCUS. If you aren’t focused on your goals, your body’s response or your life, then it isn’t possible to soar. Singular focus is also required as we aren’t good at multi-tasking. So, when you are eating, you are eating. When you are sleeping, you are sleeping without screens and lights. When you are connecting to a loved one, you are focused on them, not your phone. While moving your body during exercise, you are focused on listening to your body’s response. Certainly, you aren’t exercising and eating at the same time. That is not productive.
Simply put, if your goal in life is to have emotional and physical health or to be the best version of yourself, then focus daily on the four principles. It’s not complicated or even difficult unless you aren’t paying attention.
“You don’t have to swing hard to hit a home run. If you get the timing, it’ll go” – Yogi Berra
